Have you heard the term sacred space and been unsure of what it means to create that for yourself? It can feel overwhelming to build your own self care space, and the terms that we use to describe these spaces, like “altar” can make the entire process seem unfamiliar. It is important to know that creating a personal sacred space comes from within. No two spaces will be the same, just as no two individuals are the same. Your space will reflect things that you are drawn to. That said, you may still not know where to start, so we’ve put together some tips on how to create your own unique sacred space.
How do I choose the best space for me?
This will depend on where you live, who you live with, and how much personal space you have to yourself. You may have a table in your bedroom, or a space in your living area or you might have a whole room you can dedicate to connecting with yourself. The size of the space doesn’t matter, the trick is to set the intention to use this space consistently to sit with yourself and meditatie, write, create, or do whatever makes your heart sing.
How do I make the space mine?
What do you love? If you’re a pinterest fan, create a board that captures the atmosphere you wish to have in your space and try to replicate it. Consider putting up photos with calming views or places that hold special meaning for you. Write a vision statement to manifest your intentions, or put up some inspirational quotes that remind you to care for yourself mentally and spiritually. Lady Lorie used tapestries to create the atmosphere of her space and shifted them as she grew and was attracted to different things. You are creating a space that will evolve with you.
What items can I use in my space?
Plants, flowers and greenery raise the vibration, clean the air and keep you connected to the fairy realm through the winter months.
Crystals have a variety of powerful impacts on your space. You may already know your personal crystals. If not, you can research crystals associated with the goddesses or deities you are attracted to, or for the specific healing properties that they carry. Lady Lorie recommends setting the intention to see which crystals will best serve your higher purpose and allowing them to choose you. Believe us, you will know when you are around a crystal that wants your attention. You will be drawn to pick it up, or you won’t be able to stop looking at it, or it might make you feel calm. We recommend setting intentions with them before placing them in your space and cleansing them regularly. Stay tuned for our upcoming blog where we discuss crystal practice in more detail!
Symbols that are meaningful for you can help claim the space as your own. Find ways to incorporate your animal totem or an animal you love, numerology, sacred geometrica, celtic tree rituals, celtic calendar, divine femine goddesses or any other symbol that holds special meaning.
Vision Boards allow us to be crystal clear with our intentions, helping them manifest at a faster rate. We recommend spending the time to create a vision board of what you wish to see in your future. Keeping this in our self care space can also help us to refocus on the reasons that we are on this journey.
How do I maintain my space?
Cleansing the energy and setting the intention for your space are important practices to make sure that you are keeping consistency in your self care practice. You can do this by spraying flora water from a spray bottle, burning incense and using cleansing sticks. We do not recommend using sage for smudging if you are not indigenous, as this practice is incredibly personal to some indigenous cultures, and the use of sage by non-indigenous people is an act of appropriation. You can also maintain your space by simply keeping it tidy and spending time making small adjustments whenever you can.
Remember that the goal is to create a space that is meaningful to you and only you. Create a space that brings you joy and allows you to put in the time to engage in self care and work on your personal spiritual journey.
